The older our planet is the more polluted it becomes. New pollutants are being invented every day, and most of the population is not even aware of the damage it is inflicting on the only place people have to call home. We should tend to go green in any aspect of our life. There is no better place to start than from the office. Here are some tips on how to turn your office into an eco-friendly environment.
Include plants into your surroundings
Indoor plants filter all the pollutants created by the computer equipment. Moreover, they also cool the air in the office. They do that through transpiration. It is a process, which transfers water from plants into the atmosphere. Thanks to this, plants act as natural air conditioner, thus keeping the office a cool oasis in the hot summer days.
Go green with lunch
Restaurants produce immense amounts of waste and packaging on a daily basis. If you bring prepared food from home, you will cut down on these pollutants greatly. Moreover, if you bring homemade lunch it will definitely be healthier than the one from the restaurant. Unlike the restaurant’s portion, which can be much bigger than a person could eat, the serving size you make will be the exact one you need. You should even make your lunch from fresh, organic ingredients.
Finally, organic coffee can be the perfect ending to a great meal. However, if you prefer water, make sure it is from the water filter, and not from a disposable water bottle. We do not need that damaging plastics.
Better yet, try to use a “green kit” to reduce waste from disposables. This way you can store utensils, a canteen and a bowl or plate at your desk to eat your lunch with. You may need to go to an urgent meeting and not have time to eat at the office, so you can bring the kit to catered meetings or parties.
Always save paper
Avoid printing only on one side of the paper. Instead use both sides, and a note pad made from scraps or do not print at all. In addition, you can try to raise awareness by asking the office to buy chlorine-free paper made with a high percentage of post consumer waste.
Afterwards, the paper should be recycled when you are done using it. Creating recycled paper saves 55 percent water as compared to producing virgin paper. Moreover, recycled paper also takes 60 to 70 % less energy to produce unlike the virgin pulp paper. Furthermore, you should set up a Word program default to have narrow margins and the printer should print double sided. This way each page will contain more text, and that is how you will save paper in any future printing.
Office should adopt green practices
Implementing a recycling system, alongside encouraging green meetings, and adopting green purchasing practices, will highly benefit the office environment. Moreover, turning down the thermostat a few degrees, and installing compact fluorescent light bulbs is a great option for making an eco-friendly office.
Choose to install high bay lights for they will reduce your environmental impact and help save on energy costs. Some offices that are ready to make a step further, should install low-flow toilets, start composting kitchen scraps, and maybe even form a green committee that will help educate all the workers.
Cut down on catalogue subscriptions
Some catalogue production can use up to 53 million trees each year. Moreover, 8 hours per year is spent on dealing with junk. There are free services that give opportunity to people to make their own decision on what they want to get in their mailbox. Using it will highly reduce the mailbox clutter and, more importantly, it will help save natural resources. You are probably reading the newspaper online every day anyway.
At the end of the day, the computer should be shut down. Even better, during the day it should be on energy-saving mode. Printers, postage machines and copiers are also supposed to be turned off when they are not being used. Finally, every time you leave your conference room, the bathroom or any other room, turn off the light.
Use videoconferencing instead of traveling
Videoconferencing has never been easier. All you need to do is download the software for Skype, install it and you are all set. This tool will save you considerable amount of money and you will not need to pollute the air with unnecessary travelling.
The first step is the hardest, but it will make a change. Try to be the one who will start saving our planet, and include as many people as possible. There is nothing more important than life. However, if we do not take care of our planet, its lifetime might not be as long as we thought it would.
