We live in fast changing world. Science and technology have largely removed the constraints of space and time. It is a tragedy that inspite the ample advances that mankind has made in various fields, education today is not nurturing outstanding individual and personalities. Education should recognize the dignity and equality of all, irrespective of discrimination whatsoever. Aiming at the holistic development of man should be the ultimate aim of education.
The International Education commission says that education has remained segregated from life and work for a long time inhuman history. It is observed that when one goes to school one does not work. One goes to work after one finishes school and thereafter rarely goes to school or any other place for further education. It is felt that such a dichotomy between work and education is quite unnatural and should go for good, and should not continue. The school timetable, course of study, method of teaching, textual and non-textual materials, examination, certification, in fact all aspects of education should be free and flexible. The schools and other educational institutions need to be brought closer to the community. Thus education will promote equal opportunities, bridge the gulf between life and work, and elite and working classes. All steps need to be taken for development of democratic values, national integration, international understanding and scientific humanism.
Although character building is regarded as one of the important objectives of education, now this is ignored more than it is realized. It is felt by educationists that the school curriculum should have programs to realize this objective satisfactorily. Human values should be inculcated and ethology should find an important place in the school curriculum. Self actualization or self realization should be crucial point in the education process. But the environment social, mental and moral are not congenial to realize this objective. Hence attempts need to be made to identify the potentialities of the child and provide suitable environment for full development through various activities and programs.
Democratization of education is essential for expansion as well as qualities improvement of education. Therefore education has two aspects qualitative as well as quantitative. Enrollment of pupils, strength of teachers, number of schools and so on constitute the quantitative side where as better standard of teaching, innovative methods, better practices and experiments to improve the various section of the learners and the learned constitute the qualitative aspects. Equality of education opportunity will implement democratization of education. Democratic spirit should transcend all aspects and activities of educational institutions and personnel.
Emphasis should be laid more on learning than on teachings, laying stress on the process on self learning. The modern methods of teaching should help individuals to learn better and independently not only inside but also outside the school. Modern media of communication re to be utilized for the purpose and educational technology can be used for effective learning. Schools are to become learning resource centers where children discover knowledge and explore new avenues of education. The days are gone when pupils are required to cram information doled out to them. Today children are to be led to enjoy own pace of learning through self learning methods.
There are some lacunae in our educational system, particularly in education organization. For example, there is rigidity of single point entry and formal school hours, as a result of which children from the backward and weaker sections of the community fail to avail themselves of the school facilities adequately. On account of various socio-economic factors they cannot attend the school or after attending for some time leave the school. Hence, Endeavour’s should be made to provide part-time and non formal education extensively. Besides, it is necessary to introduce flexibility in educational organization by changing the admission requirements and working hours according to convenience of these deprived and disadvantaged pupils. They still encourage enrollment and facilitate entry of the drop-outs and non- formal learners at different stages of education.
In a narrow sense, educational technology means only the use of sophisticated hardware and in a broad sense; it is the use of any new techniques, equipments, aids, approaches in education. It involves greater psychological and pedagogical preparedness, a scientific attitude and coordinated approach to the educational processes as a whole. It also indicates one’s professional interest and zeal for making experiments and innovations for development and success of education. Optimization of learning is the main objective of educational technology. Learning is made effective as well as efficient through educational technology. Pedagogical preparedness, a scientific altitude and co-ordinate approach to the educational processes as a whole. It also indicates one’s professional interest and zeal for making experiments and innovation for development and success of education. Optimization of learning is the main objective of educational technology. Learning is made effective as well as efficient through educational technology.
The misunderstanding that the teacher will be replaced by educational technology and educational process will be dehumanized or mechanized has been rightly clarified by Henry Dieuzeide. He says “In this connection, we cannot stress too strongly the fact tht the use of educational technology far from implying any quantities decline in the role of teacher frees him from certain purely mechanical tasks of exposition and repetition, thus enabling him to devote himself to the noble and irreplaceable functions of stimulation of interest, diagnosis, motivation and advice.” It is also hoped that education in the emerging society will be able to play its role more effectively by making individuals creative, active and efficient. The modern media and methods will help in teaching more people better and more speedily.
Let us conclude by suggesting that, mankind is now faced with choice between survival and self-destruction. Education must respond creatively and rationally to the challenges and responsibilities of the times. It is the time to join our hands to usher in the angles of optimism, peace, love, and confidence so that the world will be a better place to live and prosper, for everyone.
