The idea of working from home is something that many of us would like to do for a number of reasons. There are however a lot of employers who don’t support or like the idea of their employees being able to work remotely. Business owners are often quick to assume that those who do work from home are likely to take advantage of their time and not work their contracted hours. Unfortunately this problem can be down to the mangers themselves through a lack of specific measurable goals and outcomes. Providing a manger sets out targets for their staff they should be able to monitor just how hard their employees are working. It is actually very easy to work in an office environment and take advantage of that time just by being there. Managers assume that your attendance alone is proof that you are working when really all they are witnessing is presence.
There are a number of reasons as to why working from home or remotely is good for both employer and employee. Some of these are outlined below.
It is a topic that is debated amongst many on whether or not working from home provides you with less distractions. The answer to this can be yes, providing you have the right environment to work in. A small office or a designated corner of a room where you can put some office furniture and work without distraction is ideal. Have only what you need in your office space and steer clear of televisions and other home comforts.
Getting to work can be a costly exercise if not within walking distance from your home. By working from home you can save yourself travel expenses whether it be in the form of your own car or public transport. As well as this you are able to avoid traffic jams, transport delays and other issues associated with travelling to work.
Office environments can be stressful places to be in and can often make working difficult. With lots going on and various characters being present, personalities can clash, noise levels can rise and distractions can be very apparent. As well as this some employees find that being watched over by mangers can be stressful and off putting. Being in your own personal space in a place that is comforting to you can make a real difference in the way you work.
Working from home can give you more time to balance your work and home lifestyle. By not having to leave the house early to get to the office there is more time in the morning to deal with house work before starting. It is particularly helpful for parents as they can get their children ready in the morning and be at home for them when they come in without having to worry about being late for work or leaving early. For those that have young children they can keep them at home instead of paying for childcare. This not only allows parents to know that their children are safe but saves a lot of money on childcare expenses.
