I am not sure whether you have heard much about the myths that are floating around that make you believe that making a living from a home-based business is not real or something too good to be true. But what I can tell you is that the vast majority of the myths are false, in, fact, millions of people are making a comfortable living from their home-based businesses and that some even have achieved financial, time and location freedom and living a successful dot.com lifestyle.
What are the common myths then?
You have to be a salesperson to be successful
I can tell you straight that this is totally not true. You have to realise that home-based businesses come in a variety of forms, and is not just limited to selling physical products such as cosmetics and beauty products, telemarketing and asking people around to buy this and that products alone. Think about what you are good at, says for example in providing accounting services, know how to create beautiful website, or perhaps have been passionate in providing fitness training to others, etc, don’t you think you can make an income out from that as a nonsales home-based business? I believe if you can provide a great work or a good service, you will have referral from your first customer although I don’t rule out that being a good salesperson can be an asset to getting your business off the ground; however, it is by no means an indicator of your ultimate home business success.
You’ll get rich quick
Let me be honest with you that starting a home-based business can’t make you become rich overnight, it is totally not possible unless you are associated with those schemes that conned people for money! Hence, a home-based business is like most businesses, it takes time to build up and require a considerable effort before you can reap the financial rewards.
It is good to forget those get-rich-quick come-ons, blue-sky promises rather it is wise to focus working hard to create a business where you can do what you love and provide real values that solve your customers’ problems while making a long term money at the same time and not overnight.
You can’t make any money
The study done by Money magazine in 1996 found that 20 percent of home businesses reported an income between $100,000 and $500,000 a year while other similar studies by research firm such as IDC showed that on average home businesses can generate $60,000 a year from working less than 40 hours a week from home. I would say that it is possible to make money from your home-based business if you have poured your heart and soul into it and by providing something that people will pay you.
Home-based businesses aren’t real businesses
You may like most people have a feeling that home-based businesses are not a real business. But if you were to ask yourself and check further what is a business, I believe you will notice that nowadays a commercial or industrial establishment can be found almost anywhere and is no longer limited to the traditional storefronts and mini-malls anymore, in fact, businesses are becoming globalised and virtual or digitalised, people can do their shopping online without paying a visit to the ‘brick and mortal’ shopping malls.
To be a successful home business owner, I would think that the sooner you treat your home-based business like the business as is, the sooner everyone else will and the sooner you will reap the financial rewards. I believe “FOCUSing” in what you do is very important, more so if you are in a home-based business.
