Whether we can agree on that money can’t buy us happiness or not, but one thing for sure is that money does bring us a more pleasant form of misery.
I believe it is good to think about whether we have the right balance between income generation, personal goals and our family lives.
Assuming you are on top of your finances, in that you know how to budget and spend sensibly, and have no debts and also have quite a substantial savings/money for future rainy days, ask yourself a question: Are you happy?
Please don’t get me wrong that having your finances in good working order is not a worthwhile goal, however, I believe it should not be the only goal for us. We have to honestly ask ourselves are we paying too high a price for our financial well-being, i.e. come at a cost in your life.
The true is that managing our money and finance should not be an activity that is totally divorced from all other aspects of our lives. This means that we should strive to achieve balance in our personal goals, ambitions and needs, and where applicable should include our family goals, ambitions and needs as well. In short, we need to recognize that true success and happiness is to have a balance in our personal, family and financial lives.
Would you consider yourself be truly successful and happy in:
- Chasing promotion by spending more time away from your loved ones? OR
- Refusing to sell the family home or to downsizing if that will get you closer to the life that you want to live?
However, I would like to stress that it is perfectly possible for us to earn a larger amounts of money for enjoyment and for our family to be happy too, it is all about knowing how to achieve the right “Balance”.
